Introduction and methodology

Euro Elo Rankings takes all results from UEFA club competitions (the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and, from 2021-22, the UEFA Conference League) and uses the Elo ranking system to produce a ranking of European football clubs over various seasons. It is not affiliated with UEFA or FIFA in any way.

The magnitude of change after any one match is given by:

1. The difference in scores between the two teams
A weaker team winning/drawing against a stronger team awards the weaker team more points than a win against a team of equal strength (and equally deducts more points from the stronger team). Likewise, a stronger team winning/drawing against a weaker team awards it fewer points than winning against a team of equal strength (and the weaker team loses fewer points losing against a stronger opponent). Points awarded to the winner equal the points deducted from the loser.

2. The K-factor of the match
The K-factor provides a weighting on how much scores can change by after a match. A higher K-factor for the same matchup results in a larger gain/loss in points for the teams. Results in more prestigious tournaments are weighted more favourably — a win in the UCL counts more than a win in the UEL counts more than a win in the qualifiers, and so on.

The K-factors are as follows (note that home-away ties in the knockout and qualification phases are counted as a single matchup, not two, while group/league stage games are counted individually). When a team does not play in any European competition, their score remains constant until they have reached 3 consecutive seasons out, at which point the team is removed from the ranking to prevent bloat.
When a team debuts in European football / returns from at the minimum a 3 year absence, their initial score is set to that of the lowest ranked team in their association. This approach doesn't place debutants too highly compared to frequent competitors in European football from lower ranked associations, rewarding teams for qualifying for European tournaments consistently, while still giving debutants from strong leagues an edge over teams from weaker leagues.

The inaugural Euro Elo Rankings after the 2010-11 season collates results from the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, and 2010-11 seasons. This was done so that scores diverge enough from their initial base values to produce a reasonably accurate ranking. Base values were determined based on UEFA association coefficient prior to the 2005-06 season.

*the away goals rule was discontinued by UEFA for the 2021-22 season alongside the introduction of the Conference League.
